Hello, I’m Alan. I’m a deaf coder who learned American Sign Language as a teenager, and it’s been central to my life as I navigate between the deaf and hearing worlds.
What I Offer
Whether you’re picking up your first sign or you’ve been studying for years, I offer personalized tutoring that meets you where you are:
- Conversational practice: Build fluency through real conversation
- Structured lessons: Formal instruction with progression tailored to your learning style
- Specific situation prep: Get ready for work meetings, family gatherings, presentations, or other contexts where you’ll be signing
- All levels welcome: Complete beginners through advanced signers
My Background
- Over 24 years of ASL fluency
- Teaching experience with K-1 and college students
- Deaf/hard-of-hearing - I bring authentic cultural and linguistic perspective
My Approach
First, I learn about your goals and interests, and tailor our sessions accordingly. Whether you want to focus on everyday conversation, specific vocabulary, or cultural nuances, learning ASL should be engaging!
I can speak and lipread, which gives me flexibility in how we communicate during lessons. We can work in whatever mode feels most comfortable as you’re learning - full ASL immersion, voice support while you build skills, or a mix. The focus is always on developing your ASL fluency.
Rate
Standard rate: $75/hour
Sliding scale available - I believe ASL education should be accessible. If cost is a barrier, let’s talk. No one turned away for lack of funds.
